AISTRUP TO BE INTERIM ASSOCIATE DEAN OF K-STATE'S COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
MANHATTAN -- The head of Kansas State University's department of political sciences is taking on a new challenge.
Joe Aistrup will become interim associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in early January 2009. His appointment was made by Stephen White, dean of the college.
"Professor Aistrup is an outstanding Political Scientist and Department Head. Many believe him to be among the most quoted faculty members on our campus," White said. "I very much look forward to working with Dr. Aistrup. I know that he will be a terrific associate dean.
In his new post, Aistrup's responsibilities will include curriculum planning and development; budget planning; working with the dean on reappointment and evaluation of department heads; working with the Kansas State University Foundation on the college's fundraising efforts; enrollment management; and several other areas.
Aistrup joined K-State in 2002 after serving as professor of political science and director of Fort Hays State University's Docking Institute of Public Affairs.
He specializes in American government, Kansas politics, public policy and methodology, and leads, coordinates and facilitates the teaching, research and service activities of the department of political science.
Along with teaching political science classes in U.S. government, state and local politics, elections and political parties, public policy analysis and research methods, Aistrup has published numerous journal articles and one book, and has a book forthcoming, "Kansas Politics And Government: The Clash Of Political Cultures," co-written with Ed Flentje, professor from Wichita State University.
Aistrup's work has garnered several professional awards and nominations. In 2000, he won the two best class awards for the "Northwest Missouri Regional Labor Availability Analysis," presented by the American Economic Development Council. Aistrup also was nominated for the V.O. Key award for the best book on Southern politics in 1997 for his book "The Southern Strategy Reconsidered." He earned a bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University, a master's from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a doctorate from Indiana University. Aistrup replaces Larry Rodgers, who left K-State to become dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Oregon State University.
