K-STATE'S DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC TO RING IN THE HOLIDAYS WITH SPECIAL MUSIC PERFORMANCES FOR THE COMMUNITY TO ENJOY

MANHATTAN -- The Kansas State University department of music is offering several performances, many featuring holiday music, in December. All are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.

The K-State Jazz Bands, under the direction of Wayne Goins, associate professor of music, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union.

The K-State Symphony and Concert Bands, conducted by Frank Tracz, professor of music and director of bands, and Anthony Pursell, assistant professor of music and assistant director of bands, will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, in McCain Auditorium.

The Festival of Holiday Music will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Ave. The free performance will feature the K-State Concert Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Trombone Ensemble, Mary Ellen Sutton, K-State professor of music on organ, and the First United Methodist Church Rhapsody Ringers. The audience will be able to sing along to holiday favorites like "Carol of the Bells" and "Away in a Manger."

The K-State Choir Concert will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, in All Faiths Chapel on the K-State campus. Admission is $5 for adults. All children, K-State students, military and seniors get in free. The performance includes K-State Cadence, Men's Glee Club, Women's Glee Club and the K-State Singers. It also will feature Britten's Ceremony of Carols, with guest harpist Joan Ferguson, featuring contemporary and traditional holiday numbers.

"A Christmas Concert" featuring the K-State Orchestra, Concert Choir and the theater and dance programs is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, in McCain Auditorium. The performance will highlight several Christmas favorites, including "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" and "Santa Baby," with accompanying ballet dancers. Tap dancers also will perform to "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." All proceeds from this event will help raise funds for the care of Sharyn Worcester, former principal horn of the K-State Orchestra, who is undergoing treatment for a serious illness. The suggested donation for tickets is $5 per person.

The K-State Jazz Combos, directed by Goins, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Union Station in the Union.

The Hale Library Concert Series will feature the K-State Faculty Brass Quintet with William Wingfield on piano at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, in Hale Library's Hemisphere Room. For ticket information, contact Cheri Geiser at 785-532-7447.
