FORMER FORT RILEY COMMANDER, FIRST FEMALE CHIEF OF THE CHEROKEE NATION AMONG SPEAKERS FOR FALL COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES AT K-STATE DEC. 12 AND 13

MANHATTAN -- An Army general, the 2008 national professor of the year and the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation are among the speakers for Kansas State University's fall commencement ceremonies Friday, Dec. 12, and Saturday, Dec. 13.

Commencement speakers include:

* Melvin Hunt for the College of Agriculture. Hunt, a professor of animal sciences and industry at K-State, is an active food science researcher whose focus has been meat quality and safety. Hunt has a bachelor's and a master's from K-State. The college's commencement is at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 13 in Bramlage Coliseum.

* Michael Wesch for the College of Arts and Sciences. The ceremony starts at 9 a.m. Dec. 13 in Bramlage Coliseum. Wesch, a K-State assistant professor of cultural anthropology, was recently named 2008 Carnegie/CASE national professor of the year for research and doctoral universities. He graduated summa cum laude from K-State, returning to join the faculty in 2004.

* Lt. Gen. Robert E. Durbin for the College of Business Administration. The ceremony starts at noon Dec. 13 in Bramlage Coliseum. Durbin is special assistant to the chief of staff of the Army for enterprise management, as well as former commander of the First Infantry Division and Fort Riley.

* Marjorie Hancock for the College of Education. Hancock, a K-State professor of elementary education, also is coordinator of graduate programs in curriculum and instruction. She has been a K-State faculty member since 1991 and will soon retire. The college's ceremony starts at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 13 in Bramlage Coliseum.

* Richard Gallagher for the College of Engineering. Gallagher is an associate dean of K-State's College of Engineering. He has won several teaching and research awards and has been a K-State faculty member since 1968. He will soon retire. The college's ceremony is at 3 p.m. Dec. 13 in Bramlage Coliseum.

* Chris Sorensen for the K-State Graduate School. Sorensen is a university distinguished professor of physics at K-State and the 2007 Carnegie/CASE national professor of the year for research and doctoral universities. The Graduate School ceremony is at 1 p.m. Dec. 12 in Bramlage Coliseum.

* Deborah Canter for the College of Human Ecology. Canter is head of the department of hospitality management and dietetics and was Carnegie/CASE Kansas professor of the year in 1991. The college's commencement is at 9 a.m. Dec. 13 in McCain Auditorium.

* Wilma Mankiller for K-State at Salina. Mankiller was the first female deputy chief and the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. The K-State at Salina ceremony is at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Kansas Highway patrol Headquarters, 2025 E. Iron Ave., Salina.
