Jane E. Hegland, Ph.D.

In addition to her administrative duties, Dr. Hegland teaches courses on dress and identity, aesthetics, trends, and historic costume in the apparel merchandising program. Hegland’s scholarship includes studies on cross-dressing, the relationship between rape and dress, the ritual of the high school prom in American culture, aesthetic elements of dress, the application of material culture analysis, and the significance of the corset.

Karen H. Hyllegard, Ph.D

Dr. Hyllegard currently serves as coordinator for the Department’s undergraduate program in Apparel and Merchandising. She teaches courses in merchandising promotion, retail environment design and planning, and merchandising policies and strategies. Her research interests include consumer behavior, promotion, international and socially responsible retailing, and store design.

Melody L. A. LeHew, Ph.D.

Dr. LeHew teaches courses focused on retail management, theory, and strategy, fashion-related consumer behavior, and the apparel and textile industry in the Apparel Marketing program at Kansas State University. LeHew's scholarship corresponds to her teaching expertise. Studies have been completed related to loyalty issues, patronage and shopping motivation in consumer behavior; market orientation and productivity characteristics in retail strategy; and infusing social and environmental responsibility into post-secondary education curricula. Nancy N. Lyons, Ed.D.

Dr. Lyons teaches courses as Dress in Popular Culture, Ready-to-Wear Analysis, Apparel Design, Fashion Promotion and Visual Merchandising, and Textiles. Her research interests include alternative shopping technologies, consumer behavior, and fashion advertising.

Linda Manikowske, Ph.D.

Dr. Manikowske joined the Cooperative Extension Service at South Dakota State University as Clothing and Textiles Specialist. She served in that position until August 1996 when she took her current position at North Dakota State University. Dr. Manikowske’s research interests include adolescent dress and behavior, consumer issues related to retail merchandising, and electronic retailing. She teaches courses in fashion dynamics, dress and human behavior, product development, visual merchandising, and leads various study tours along with the internship program in the department.

Deborah J. C. Meyer, Ph.D.

Dr. Meyer teaches courses in the Apparel Marketing program at KSU. Although she has taught numerous courses in her past 6 years at KSU, she currently teaches graduate level consumer behavior as well as the undergraduate merchandising courses of buying and forecasting. Dr. Meyer has also taught graduate research methods, undergraduate consumer behavior as well as other merchandising courses. Dr. Meyer's scholarship has focused on textile and apparel Master's degree curriculum as well as on men's, women's and adolescent consumer behavior. She has also been active in teaching scholarship focused on textile and apparel curricular issues. Dr. Meyer's background in the textile and apparel industry as both a buyer and manager for almost 10 years gives her unique insight in the merchandising of products and in the behavior of consumers.

Susan C. Strickler, Ed.D.

Dr. Strickler teaches courses on retailing, merchandising and buying, practicum and professionalism, and an introductory course to the major. Dr. Strickler’s research considers how the previous experience of potential or current employees impacts the effectiveness of orientation and the resultant service provided to the customers. Integral aspects to the research include retail orientation programs, experiential education of the retail employee, and delivered customer service.
