Biography

A returned Peace Corps volunteer (Honduras,1979-1980), Doug Nelson left a 20-year career as a teacher and coach in 2000 to work for Variable Annuity Life Insurance Company as a financial advisor.

In 2011, after 11 years in the industry, specializing in the 403b market, he ventured out on his own to build an independent, comprehensive practice as Doug Nelson Money Coach, focusing on families, farmers/ranchers, coaches, and non-traditional couples as well as those interested in aligning their money with their values.

Nelson also teaches online graduate classes at University of Nebraska--Lincoln as a lecturer in the Great Plains IDEA graduate program in family financial planning. His primary course is Retirement and Employee Benefits. He has also taught Insurance for Family, and he has developed an online seminar addressing Sustainable, Responsible, and Impact Investing. Another course he teaches is Financial Planning for Military Families.

Nelson has been an active participant in several civic/volunteer organizations, including the former treasurer of both the Downtown Rotary Club and the University of Colorado-Boulder Alumni Association. He was recognized in 2013 as the University of Colorado's Outstanding Alumni Ambassador.

He frequently takes assignments providing personal financial counseling to soldiers, addressing the unique financial challenges of non-commissioned officers serving in the United States Army Recruiting Command. He also volunteers in the Financial Planning Association's partnership program Operation Homefront.

Nelson has been a member of the Financial Planning Association--Greater Kansas City since 2004. He is also a member of the U.S. Social Investment Forum and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. When not on the road, “Coach” Nelson volunteers as an assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kan.

Nelson and his wife, Janice, have a daughter, Jillian, a student at the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University.
