Biography

After completing her B.S. degree, Jane Swinney was selected for the management training program for Dayton Hudson in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She served as area manager for children's, assistant buyer in contemporary women's and buyer in sleepwear. She was hired as assistant store manager for May Company at their store in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Swinney completed her M.S. at Iowa State University and moved into an instructor position at Oklahoma State University (OSU) teaching merchandising-focused classes. She taught workshops for small retailers at the Dallas Market Center through the OSU Center for Marketing and Merchandising. She completed her Ph.D. and moved through the assistant professor level and currently is associate professor and department head for Design, Housing and Merchandising.

Her research focus is with small retailers and understanding their entrepreneurial orientation to their business. She serves as president of the American Collegiate Retail Association where the field of retailing is promoted as a rigorous academic discipline based in theory and providing secure employment for graduates of retail programs.
