Population and Quantitative Genetics

Course Description
The course objective is to introduce quantitative genetics models and tools and apply them in a variety of contexts to enable students to approach and resolve quantitative problems in their own genetical research. The course presents the theory of Mendelian loci arranged on chromosomes and how loci, genetic maps, and populations are characterized. It introduces how data from DNA markers can be used to further our understanding of underlying genetic factors, describes mechanisms that change allele frequencies at Mendelian loci, considers how Mendelian loci affect continuously distributed and environmentally sensitive traits, models observations of such traits in terms of resemblance between relatives, and uses all of these topics to develop more effective programs for genetic improvement of agriculturally important animal and plant populations.

Course Access
 
In the three weeks prior to the start of class, students will receive course information and access instructions via email from the Iowa State campus coordinator, Iowa State Online
 
The email will include instructions for how students can set up their Iowa State Net-ID and password which is needed to log into Iowa State’s Canvas system. It typically takes 1-2 business days after setting up a Net-ID before students can log into Iowa State’s Canvas. Courses may not be visible in Canvas until the first day of class.
 
If students experience problems registering for a Net-ID, they can contact the Iowa State Solution Center for assistance at 515-294-4000. Students will need their 9-digit ISU university ID (provided in the ISU campus coordinator email) for the Solution Center to assist them. Proctor needed for TWO 2-hour midterms and ONE 3-hour final. Synchronous components on Tuesday/Thursdays from 8:55AM - 10:45AM CST.
