Biography

After completing her Bachelor of Science degree, Jane Swinney was selected for the management training program for Dayton Hudson in Minneapolis, Minn. She served as area manager for children's wear, assistant buyer in contemporary women's wear and buyer in sleepwear. She was hired as assistant store manager for May Company at their store in Fort Collins, Colo.

Swinney completed her Master of Science at Iowa State University and moved into an instructor position at Oklahoma State University teaching merchandising-focused classes. She taught workshops for small retailers at the Dallas Market Center through the OSU Center for Marketing and Merchandising. She completed her doctorate and moved through the assistant professor level and currently is associate professor and head of the OSU Department of Design, Housing and Merchandising.

Her research focus is with small retailers and understanding their entrepreneurial orientation to their business. She serves as president of the American Collegiate Retail Association, which promotes retailing as a rigorous academic discipline based in theory.
