Karen Murie is the oldest of seven children and grew up in Valley City, N.D., a town 60 miles west of Fargo, N.D., where she graduated from Valley City State University with a Bachelor of Arts in general business. She has lived in Fargo for 38 years, been employed at North Dakota State University since 1992 and began working as NDSU campus coordinator in 2003.

Home repairs, yard work and flowers and crafts (including knitting, sewing, metal stamping, mosaic, refurbishing furniture, decorating and string-art) keep Murie busy outside of work. She also enjoys attending NDSU Bison basketball games and concerts in the area, particularly concerts of older rock n roll music.

Her family has had many cats throughout the years, and Sophie, a black and white cat originally adopted by her son and daughter-in-law, now shares a home with Murie. Her son, Kyle, and daughter-in-law, Erica, both NDSU graduates, now live in Portland, Ore, and that geographic area has become a favorite travel destination—especially visiting Seaside on the Pacific Ocean.

Working with Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance students has been a rewarding experience for Murie, whether making new friends or connecting with previous friends who have been enrolled in the programs.  She finds it is especially exciting to help the students learn the constantly changing procedures to be followed when enrolling in classes and achieving completion of their programs. Murie wants all students to succeed in their program completion and encourages them to work with their advisors and instructors to reach their goals.
