Mascot

Tony the Landshark has been the Ole Miss mascot since August 2018. Named after the late Tony Fein who served in the U.S. Army before playing football for the university. Fein introduced the term “Landshark” and its accompanying “fins up” sign to the football team during his 2008 season.

University of Mississippi Traditions

The University of Mississippi (by name Ole Miss) is classified as an R1 University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. It also holds the distinction of being one of 33 National Sea Grant Program Institutions and a participant in the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program. From its first class of 80 students, Ole Miss has grown to a doctoral degree-granting university with 15 academic divisions and more than 23,000 students.

Recognized among the nation’s most beautiful, Old Miss’s main campus is in Oxford. The most popular place on the UM campus is The Grove, ten acres of grass shaded by large oak trees where tailgaters gather for football weekends, transforming the plot into a virtual tent city. When passersby yell “Are you ready?”, prepare to respond with the Hotty Toddy chant. Those curious to hear the chant can watch Betty White lead the crowd in this YouTube video.
